What’s Happening RIGHT NOW at Carpenters

Carpenters for Christ is gearing up for the start of fall construction which kicks off on Saturday, August 23rd. The home will be at 4708 J. E. Wiley, and this will be our first opportunity to participate in the Frazier Courts urban renewal initiative that began last year. It will be a 6-week build, working on Saturdays only, and there will be much to accomplish on each of the days we are building. Make plans now to join us! Remember, no experience is necessary. (For Driving Directions, click here.)

To volunteer contact Jane Parker at jhp01@aol.com and 214-522-0204 or Joe B. Fortson at fortsonj@aol.com and 214-523-2297.

A Great Fall Building Program

Carpenters for Christ promises a great fall for those who can only volunteer on Saturdays. The first opportunity will be offered in the Frazier Courts area, a re-development zone joint ventured by the City of Dallas and public-spirited private groups, already underway. Become a partner in this work in progress and an eyewitness to what the public and private sectors can accomplish when they put their hearts into it. The following information relates to our first home of the fall:

Become A Carpenter, the Several Ways You Can Do It:

To volunteer in construction with Carpenter for Christ requires no skill or experience, but many of us would prefer to be involved in Carpenters in less physical ways, but ways that are still extremely important, as witnessed in 1St Corinthians 12:12, to Carpenters’ mission of providing a hand up to so many deserving families in the Dallas area. Several way are:

Volunteer for Construction:

It requires about 200 people and approximately 2,000 volunteer hours, to complete a single one of our houses. That translates to 10,000 to 12,000 volunteer hours a year. Opportunities here are open to persons age 16 and over. We’ve had persons in their 80s volunteer for construction.

Provide Financial Support:

The cost to the Church of a Habitat home can range between $40,000 and $55,000. When Carpenters builds 5 to 6 homes a year, it can require up to $330,000 annually to sustain the program. Considering that HPUMC has a plan to build 100 homes, there is not sufficient room in the Church’s annual budget to provide for the full cost of every home. Gifts of all sizes, in addition to one’s pledge to the annual budget, are very much appreciated and necessary. Persons interested in making additional contributions to Carpenters for Christ can send their payments, marked “Carpenters for Christ,” directly to the Church’s business office, or contact us for additional information.

Contact:  Joe B. Fortson at fortsonj@hpumc.org or 214-523-2297.

Volunteer to Provide Lunches:

Carpenters for Christ provides complimentary lunches for all its onsite workers each work day. This involves the preparation or donation of approximately 35 lunches each day we build, which translates to 250-300 lunches for each home built and as many as 1,600 lunches a year. Opportunities to provide these lunches on a daily basis are available to Sunday School classes, Bible study groups, UMW Circles, private businesses, restaurants and individuals.

Join Cross + Stitchers for Christ:

Carpenters for Christ has a long-standing tradition of presenting to each new partner family a personalized embroidered sampler similar to the ones that adorned living room walls as far back as colonial America. These works of folk art are prepared in advance of Carpenters’ building schedules and are personalized with the family name as each house is completed and dedicated. These samplers are created by the cross stitchers on their own time schedules and in their own homes. Carpenters provides the training and materials. We encourage you to learn more about this great HPUMC tradition.

Participation Is Not Just For HPUMC Members

More and more, members and friends of the Church are organizing the people with whom they work during the week to volunteer in one of the several capacities for Carpenters for Christ. They have found that it encourages them to bond in ways that just aren’t possible on the job and that it improves office attitudes and cooperation inside the workplace.  Carpenters has welcomed non-member individuals and groups up to 50, in number, to participate in its work. Please remember to visit with Jane Parker, our Volunteer Coordinator, and she can assist with information and ideas.
